Tartuffe
After Moliere
Tartuffe is a new version of the classik by Jean-Baptiste Poclain Moliere, which has remained with an important place in the history of theatre long after the era of Classicism.
From biting social satire to heatrbreaking family drama , the play offers multiple themes and perspectives on a familiar plot: a mysterious visitor begins to live in the home of a wealthy bourgeois family and very soon after upends the lives of each of its members. Every one is obsessed with the guest, whether through infatuation or denial. But is Tartuffe a hypocrite or a reflection of the demons of others in a society that has replaced faith with illusions? This version of the play begins with the story of Jonah in the Old Testament , who , shirking the commission to preach, is swallowed by a whale and lives inside it for three days and three nights. And it is here that Jonah/Tartuffe is washed ashore and taken into the home of Orgon where he provokes an ocean of passion and doubt. The only way out is an unexpected sacrifice.
